Trailer Time: Audition (1999)

dir. Takashi Miike

It's been a while since I posted a trailer piece, but after watching this trailer for Takashi Miike's masterpiece Audition, I just had to post it. As you know, I've often bemoaned the fact that so many trailers reveal far too much about the movies they're advertising. Thrillers generally give away far too many clues, horror movies ruin too many scares, and comedies reveal all the best jokes. And each of these instances is always a bummer. But no trailer I've watched thus far has anything on this one for Audition. (The poster, for that matter is a huge give-away as well.)

Now, I don't wanna say too much about the movie, in case you haven't seen it yet; but there's a shock at the climax that hits the viewer like a ton of bricks. Tonally, the movie hits the breaks, and kicks into reverse, then starts freebasing before running naked into the woods. It's one of the most shocking moments in cinema I can remember. So what does the trailer do? It showcases only the shocking twist. There you go, folks, here's some shit you won't excpect...or wouldn't have expected if you didn't already know about it beforehand because you just watched the trailer we made for it. Sorry about that.

That being said, despite all my misgivings, this is one helluva trailer. Watch it if you've already seen the movie.
